Football, not usually the topic of choice in a punk zine. I think this subject is taboo, or at the least disliked in most scenes. I believe however, it is not always the evil jock bullshit that it is portrayed to be.

Now wait a minute, lets get broader than football. Let's expand to include athletics as a whole. How many of you out there are guilty of participating in high school athletics? Maybe enjoyed it? Letting yourself fall victim to the attraction of physical activity is not as wrong as some people want you to believe. The truth is, you can be an athlete without being a jock. On the same lines you can also be a jock without being an athlete.

Why is it that when people hear that I played football and ran track, it is something to jeer at? What is the funny part? That I learned responsibility and dedication? That I am physically fit? Or is it that I wasted four years of my life that I could have spent going to shows and working at being more punk. This might be true, I suppose I could have ran by myself, avoiding asshole coaches and group showers. But, I think I gained something by working with a team. If nothing else, tolerance.

Does anyone out there agree with me? Have you a varsity letter hidden away somewhere? If you do, don't be ashamed of it. The hard work you spent on getting it contributed to who you are today. If what you are today is a jock, I am sorry. But, it is your own fault. Go drink beer and date rape or whatever it is you do. If you turned out OK, well you are just another statistic.

Congratulations.

Dan Webber
