6. Rage Against the Machine- Evil Empire

Way back in 1993, Dimension films came out with the hit movie thriller o The Crow. Now, do we even remember the looks of Brandon Lee, pictures of little girls skating in the rain, or evil druggie men dying in brutal and self-describing ways? Probably not. But one thing probably still remains, the sound track to The Crow on the shelf with the rest of your CD's.

I played this sound track a few times before coming to a startling revelation- There was music made by blacks on it that didnt suck! I dont like to think of myself as a racist, so I was very pleased. Unfortunately, I soon found out that Rage Against the Machine is made up of just about every ethnicity but African-American. Oh well.

Rage's first CD, which is self titled, features fast, blaring guitar riffs combined with non-stop lyrics of martyrism, racism, and war. Lead singer Zach De La Rocha pounds out his words with a fierceness unknown to most Mexicans, and his band mates with their shaven heads and dark spiralling tatoos back him up with vengeance.

Things didn't change much with the release of Evil Empire in the spring of '96, accept MTV got a hold of their video for "Bull on Parade", called it alernative, and got a kick out of playing it all day long. A tremendous dishonour to a very worth-while band. As soon as one starts to get pissed of about how shitty their life is, someone cranks up Rage to hear words shouted like 'Fear is your only God" "Where there used to be a library now theres just a mind cemetary" and other lyrics about rebellion in a time of disease, war, and death. What ever this hard-core political music is, it sells.
